My name is Yordanos Belay, and I’m honored to represent the beautiful country of Eritrea in the Miss Europe Continental competition. At just 21 years old, I stand at the intersection of ambition and identity, weaving together the threads of my Eritrean heritage, my journey in healthcare, and my passion for modeling and creative expression. Recently, I completed my first year as a Pharmacy apprentice, and alongside this, I work as a medical assistant after earning my MCA qualification. My days are filled with learning, supporting others, and also carving my own path in the world of fashion and community service.
Beyond my professional pursuits, I am deeply committed to social change as one of the young ambassadors for Compass Collective, a London-based charity that uplifts young refugees through the arts. Whether I’m on the runway or in a community space, I believe that modeling and service are united by the mission of inspiring confidence, embracing identity, and making a positive difference in the world
.How has your Eritrean heritage influenced your pageant and creative journey?
My Eritrean background is the foundation of my strength, creativity, and sense of purpose. Eritrea is a country brimming with culture, beauty, and diversity home to nine unique ethnic groups who collectively celebrate love, unity, and harmony. Growing up immersed in this rich heritage has imbued me with resilience, discipline, and deep pride in my identity. These values guide me on stage, in my creative endeavors, and in everyday life.
In pageantry, my heritage becomes both my inspiration and my armor. The traditions of Eritrea teach that when communities unite in love, they can overcome any milestone. This lesson lies at the heart of my journey whether I am representing my culture in a competition or expressing myself through fashion and art. The vibrant colors, dances, and stories of Eritrea are not simply elements of my past they are living forces that empower and guide me forward
.How do you stay connected to Eritrean traditions while living abroad?
Living away from Eritrea has only deepened my appreciation for my roots. My connection to tradition is grounded first and foremost in family. Many of my relatives remain in Eritrea, and I left my homeland when I was quite young. Every holiday, every phone call, every shared recipe is a bridge back to where I come from. I especially cherish our traditional Eritrean holidays, where music, food, and laughter bring us together regardless of distance.
Cooking Eritrean meals is another way I keep my heritage alive. The aromas of spices and the rhythm of preparation transport me home, and sharing these meals with friends and colleagues fosters understanding and connection. Even abroad, these small rituals keep me grounded, reminding me daily of my identity and the legacy I carry.
What motivated you to participate in Miss Europe Continental, and what does this competition mean to you personally?
My decision to participate in Miss Europe Continental was born out of a desire to celebrate individuality and empower women. This competition transcends beauty; it is a global stage for stories, cultures, and dreams. Personally, it represents a chance to amplify my voice and share my journey.
As a young woman who left her family at fifteen to seek asylum in England, I know what it means to start anew. Receiving my status was both a relief and a beginning; I set out to build my future through education and modeling. Balancing pharmacy studies with the demands of the runway has been challenging, but it has taught me resilience, determination, and the value of hard work.
Miss Europe Continental is more than a title. It is a testament to overcoming adversity and the importance of representation. I want younger people especially refugees and those facing uncertainty to see that dreams are achievable. This platform allows me to prove that with vision and perseverance, anyone can build their own empire, regardless of where they begin.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far in your modeling journey and how did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge in my modeling career arose during my debut pageant, Miss Africa Great Britain 2024. This event was my first opportunity to showcase my cultural identity and empower young refugees, proving that they too can achieve their dreams no matter where they come from. However, the experience was marred by controversy when a YouTuber publicly questioned my right to represent Eritrea, attempting to discredit my journey and identity on social media.
It was painful to watch my name and story manipulated. Yet, I discovered the power of community support during this difficult time. The Eritrean youth community rallied around me encouraging, voting, and reminding me of my worth. Their solidarity transformed adversity into strength. In the end, I was honored to win 2nd runner-up at Miss Africa Great Britain 2024. This experience taught me the profound value of authenticity and the transformative impact of unity.
In your opinion, what qualities define a true beauty queen beyond outer beauty?
A true beauty queen embodies authenticity, compassion, and confidence. She inspires through her story, remains steadfast to her values, and uses her platform to uplift her community. For me, being a queen is not a solitary achievement; it is woven from the support, love, and unity of those around her. External beauty may draw the eye, but inner beauty leaves a lasting mark. Real queens radiate kindness, resilience, and the courage to be themselves.
What advice would you give to future contestants of Miss Europe Continental who dream of standing where you are today?
My advice to aspiring contestants is simple: believe in yourself and embrace your uniqueness. The journey is not about perfection or image—it is about authenticity and heart. Work hard, trust in your vision, and carry your culture proudly. When you remain true to who you are, your inner light will shine and the world will recognize your star quality.
Let every challenge be an opportunity for growth and every moment on stage a celebration of your story. Remember, success is not measured by crowns, but by the lives you touch and the courage you embody. The Miss Europe Continental platform offers a chance to inspire and to be inspired—so show the world your true colors, and never stop chasing your dreams.
Conclusion
The journey of a beauty queen is not defined by glitz and glamour alone; it is a path of growth, resilience, and service. For me, representing Eritrea is a privilege and a responsibility. Through pageantry, modeling, and community work, I strive to honor my heritage, empower others, and build bridges between cultures. I hope my story encourages others to embrace their roots, stay true to themselves, and reach for greatness because when we do, we not only shine individually, but also illuminate the world together.
